Huntley High School’s girls varsity lacrosse team went up against Lake Zurich last night in their first game of the season. This was Huntley High School’s first-ever girls varsity lacrosse game, this is the first year the school has had a team.

But their first game of the season showed that the girls have a long way to go. The final score of the game last night was 17-1.

“We need a lot of work, but we are going to learn,” said junior Abby Ryan.

The girls’ defense was their biggest struggle in last night’s game. When on offense, they were taking plenty of shots and being smart about the movement of the ball, but when it came to their defense, the girls could not stay with Lake Zurich.

“This team was very good and I am very proud of the team,” said Erin Seitz, JV and varsity coach. “They stayed together, they stayed positive, and they worked as hard as they could and that’s all we can ask of them.”

The Red Raiders’ goalie, however, is definitely a huge asset for the team. Kelsey Werner always put up a fight, blocking a lot of Lake Zurich’s shots, preventing them from scoring even more points.

While a loss is never easy, it’s a great learning experience for the team. They know what they have to improve upon and what to do moving forward to make this season a great one, as Huntley High School’s first girls varsity lacrosse team.

“We have some work to do, but we’ll get there,” said Seitz. “We can only go up from here.”
