A new season and an inexperienced team have not been an easy challenge for head softball coach Mark Petryniec.

With the team now just over halfway through its 2012 campaign, spirits remain high despite a 5-17 overall record and a 1-7 conference record, Petryniec feels it is good for the development of a core of mostly sophomores.

“This season has been a growing process and the girls continue to improve on a daily basis,” said Petryniec. “We still have our ultimate goal of winning a regional and the team is making great strides toward that.”

With good offensive production from junior Randi Peterson, who is batting with a .474 average, and senior Tara Lycos who has had 10 runs on the season despite an injured knee that goal is not too far-fetched for the Raiders.

Should the Raiders win a regional, it would be an advancement from their first-round loss to Crystal Lake South in last year’s regional.

The team earned its first Valley Division game against Dundee Crown on Thursday.
