2011 Boys Baseball Preview

As the team steps out onto the field they are focusing on the game, strategizing about what they can do to win, but one image is stuck in the back of their mind. One they have been thinking about since last year, their team going down to state and taking fourth. The team knows that every pitch, every throw, every play, every game, they perform has to be flawless if they want to go down again and place higher then they did last year.

The boys baseball season, which started in March, has been doing very well this year, with a record of 15-1 and 10-0 in their conference, they are working their way up the leader board to follow in last year’s footsteps to go down to state again.

The team has improved a few things since last years season, working on defense and pitching to improve their game doing drills at practice.

The team has been doing a lot of training to improve and keep up their baseball skills in the off-season. Taking advantage of open gyms and anything they can so they are ready when the season comes along.

“We worked hard in the off-season,” said Bryce Only. “We got stronger, faster and we became a better overall program.  We have a open gym schedules that our Coaches set up to help us get better.”

The boys have many seniors leaving this year. That mans a lot of spaces need to be filled and friends will be missed.

“We are one big family and playing together is important to our success., said Nick Kostalek “This team is so talented and playing a game we love together makes it fun to come out to the field each day.”

All the seniors on the baseball team play a part in the team’s success weather it is big or small. They have their own talent that makes the teamwork as a whole. They cheer each other on and keep their sprits up during a game that is not going their way.

“Each of the senior bring a big part to the team and they are going to be missed,” said Jakubowski

There are a couple of players on the team that are doing exceptionally well this year. Carlos Alvarez with a batting average of .556, Colin Lyman with a batting average of .423, Bryce Only with a batting average of .327, Jake Perkins with a batting average of  .320. (idk what is good for any of the stats) and top pitchers Craig Klein and Jake Staab

The team has been wining almost all their games so far with their only loss against South Elgin high school (4-7).

“The [South Elgin] game was an outstanding game. It was one of the best games that we have played,” said Carlos Alvarez “I think that our situational hitting is what hurt us during the game. We had many opportunities to win the game but we just couldn’t get it done.”

Although the team did not beat South Elgin they had a great game against Jacobs on the 14, winning 11-6 not getting all their runs until the second inning where they made all 11 runs just in that one inning.

“ We were seeing the ball and making contact,” said Nick Corpolongo “ Plus it dose not help to want to beat a team rival.”

The team has 19 games left until they start regionals. Although they know every game wont go their way they have high hopes that they will keep their number one spot conference and ultimately go down to state and get a higher rank then they did during last years season.
