The day is finally here. The day most people dread all year, leaving them wanting to pull the covers back over their heads and hide all day long.

Whether they are single, in a relationship, or even just have a bad past with this day, what many people like to call a “Hallmark Holiday,” the fear of seeing affectionate actions is daunting.

Seeing couples in love, couples not in love, and everyone else in between on this day is interesting in itself.

But why stress over just another day that happens to come along with a name tag?

While you’re sitting at home watching a sappy chick flick such as “The Notebook,” walking through aisles of candy and pink, red, and white Valentine’s day merchandise or even witnessing PDA right before your eyes in the strangest of places like the frozen vegetable section at Walmart, you may find yourself asking, “What is the point of this silly holiday?”

Is it for the candy companies to sell the same amount of candy they sell on any other holiday?

For couples to feel obligated to waste money on $4 cards and $20 bouquets of flowers from Walgreens after they forget last minute?

Maybe it’s for couples and single people to feel worse about themselves on a specific day of the year?

Don’t sit around sobbing by yourself; call up some friends, order a pizza, buy yourself some flowers. Valentine’s day is only 24 hours long, just like Feb. 17, March 10, and August 1. There’s no reason to hate it.

On the other hand, if you’re in a relationship don’t let the debbie downers of the world stop you from enjoying this day about love. You shouldn’t restrict yourself and significant other to not enjoying this day just the same as any other day.

No matter what this holiday means to you, remember it’s just another day out of 365 to love anyone just the same. Your siblings, your parents, your significant other, your favorite show to binge watch on Netflix, even food.
