The Red Raiders continued their winning streak, bringing the season to 10-0.
Friday night’s starters were seniors Ali Andrews, Kayla Barreto, and Paige Renkosik, along with juniors Maddy Moffett and Morgan Clausen.
The game began with Andrews tipping the ball to Barreto, who scored the first points for Huntley. Huntley quickly took the lead, 3-2. During the last six seconds of the quarter, Andrews made a free throw, bringing the score to 21-14. At the start of the second quarter, Clausen made four free throws, making the score 38-23.
While the first half was successful for Huntley, there was room for improvement.
“Our offense and defense needed a little work in the first half, but we responded well in the second,” said coach Steve Raethz.
Coming back stronger, Clausen took the lead by scoring early in the half. Adjusting her mentality for the second half, Barreto came back strong on defense. Barreto and Andrews’s clear communication allowed Andrews to bring the score to 43-26. Also contributing to the team’s success, Moffett hit a three pointer. During the last two seconds of third quarter, Clausen’s score ended the quarter 64-31.
In the final quarter, senior Teagan Papka and juniors Kaylee Andreas, Courtney Hagn, and Ashlyn Schlapia were implemented. Scoring the last point of the game, Andreas brought the end score to 69-39.
For Barreto, this game was her season-high in points. Her strong response in the second half allowed her to end with a point total of 15.
“Barreto had the energy tonight and she definitely played quite well,” said Schlapia.
Playing a back to back game, the girls basketball team faces Barrington on Saturday.
