[RECAP] Day one at Redbird Arena

%5BRECAP%5D+Day+one+at+Redbird+Arena

I was sitting next to an IHSA reporter on press row when he joked to another journalist, “…and we’re here at Redbird Arena, where nothing exciting happens ever.”

He couldn’t be any more wrong.

The first game was a thriller that went from surprisingly boring to an overtime contest in the span of a few shots.  It was Vernon Hills who upset three-time defending champion Montini for a spot in tomorrow’s Class 3A Championship game.  It’s safe to say it was sweet revenge after the Lady Broncos beat the Cougars for the trophy last year.

Game two was a routine slamming by Quincy Notre Dame as the Lady Raiders high-octane feasted upon the Morton Potters’ defense.  QND’s victory kept it undefeated at 29-0.

The Class 4A Semifinal Games were just as interesting as Huntley shut down Rolling Meadows’ fierce offense for two and a half periods before the Mustangs broke free and beat Huntley handedly on both offense and defense come the fourth period.  The last game of the day was between two powerhouse programs: Whitney Young and Marian Catholic.  Nobody expected to see the wear on the Dolphins as the Spartans held All American Janee Thompson to seven points as their own Ashton Millender torched Whitney Young’s defense for 29 points.  The Dolphins picked up a few technicals and ended up in foul trouble, adding insult to injury in a rout that sent Marian Catholic to tomorrow night’s 4A title game against Rolling Meadows.

The reporter should’ve changed his line.

Nothing exciting happens only sometimes.
