Season for Sheer

Season+for+Sheer

Primarily seen on the Spring 2018 fashion runways, sheer is the way to go when the cold weather leaves.

For many, the only sheer items they own are the stockings they are forced to wear only when they have to dress especially fancy for some occasion or tights for a dance class. But the spring fashion season is aiming to change that perception.

A prime example of the sheer trend in the industry can be seen in Molly Goddard’s work. The British designers see through designs attracted attention in 2014.

According to Vogue, she recently gained mainstream traction in the United States when Rihanna wore a pink tutu dress from the brand at the New York Women’s March in 2017.

The trend can also be seen on red carpets across the globe. A popular iteration is the sheer Dior dress seen on celebrities like Bella Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, and Dianna Agron. Hadid has even worn different versions of the gown on three separate occasions.

It takes confidence to wear sheer or see-through pieces outside of the comfort of your own home. But never fear; even those who do not feel daring can pull of this trend.

“I think there’s a time and place for it, but you should wear what makes you happy,” senior Marisa Bowman said.

According to Glamour, the sheer look does not have to be risque. When layered with other pieces, the trend is chic instead of indecent.

Layer a sheer jacket over a patterned top to combine two of 2018’s hottest trends. Brands like Ralph and Russo, Pringle of Scotland, Dries Van Noten, Anya Hindmarch, and Christopher Kane all showcased sheer jackets on the runway for the spring season.

To show off more or less skin, a long sleeve or a bralette can be paired underneath.

“Freedom of expression is important,” Bowman said. “People should wear what makes them feel confident.”

Sheer sleeves are also a popular option with Target’s Women’s Bell Sleeve Blouse with Lace Trim having sheer shoulders ($44.99).

To dress it up for a weekend party, try Forever 21’s Kikiriki Sheer Lace Maxi Dress ($78.00) or Sheer Mesh Cinched Hem Dress ($12.90).
