After the unending stream of murmurs, fear, and investigating on Wednesday afternoon, rumors of a potential shooting at Huntley High School on Friday have boiled down to one thing.

“Nothing,” said Principal Dave Johnson.  “We spent hours yesterday trying to backtrack on these rumors and find absolutely nothing as where they originated.”

Johnson, along with police officers and deans, spent time yesterday following rumor paths of various students.  Not one has been credible, according to Johnson.

“It is safe to say that we have been unable to find the source of these rumors nor the specifics about the rumors or whatever is being stated about what’s going to happen on Friday,” he said.  “It’s just people saying that they heard the two students involved in the fight on Tuesday late in the afternoon.  We backtracked, we talked to their parents, police talked to them, and there’s nothing there credible at all.”

After yesterday’s investigating, it is believed that the rumors resulted from a combination of various factors, as stated in an email sent to District 158 parents late yesterday afternoon.

“There were students who were Tweeting things out, texting their parents, and posting things on Facebook about the rumor,” Johnson said.  “I think that this convergence of technology, Sandy Hook, the Mayan Calendar, and the last day before winter break [made a] perfect storm.”

As for the remainder of today and tomorrow, the last day of school before Huntley High School’s 16-day-long winter break, Johnson feels that students will not be in jeopardy.

“I think Huntley High School is going to be as safe as it has been any other day,” he said.

Although the rumors hold no weight to this point, Huntley High School will still be taking precautions.

“We will have increased police presence inside the school and outside the school to show that we take this seriously,” Johnson said.
