Song of the week: “Under Pressure” provides the perfect dose of inspiration

By Courtney Thomas
May 6, 2015
In the last four weeks of school, Queen’s “Under Pressure” reminds us to stay cool. The song was released on Oct. 27, 1981. It peaked at 29 on the U.S. Music Chart, and it was number one in Argentina, Netherlands, and the UK. The music video features different forms of pressure destroying things, which is a cool, literal spin on a music video. Think of this song when the last few weeks make you want to pull your hair out. Think of this song when you can not sleep at night because you are too stressed about finals. Play this song when you need a pick-me-up-inspirational song.

Twenty One Pilot’s newest album, “Blurryface,” comes out May 19. The band has released two singles leading up to the album drop. The first single, “Fairly Local,” was released via YouTube on March 16. The video has been viewed 2.8 million times since then and has been followed by their second single, “Tear in my Heart.” Both songs are different from their previous songs; they have a different, but not defined, sound. “Tear in my Heart” has had 2.5 million views since it was released to YouTube April 6. Check out both of the videos here!

It was a frigid afternoon when the meet started. The stands were filled with the parents, of the athletes, wearing winter coats, hats and gloves. It was a different temperature than what Huntley had grown accustomed to over the past few weeks, but the track and field team were just as ready as ever to compete.

Song of the Week: “Move Along” leaves a sense of inspiration to the finishing school year

By Courtney Thomas
April 21, 2015
[T]he song “Move Along” by the All-American Rejects keeps playing on the radio and I keep wondering why. I think it keeps playing to remind us that school is almost over and all we can do is keep pushing until summer. I know I am struggling to get through the last few weeks of school and for me, the song is an inspiration. “Move Along” was the second single from All-American Rejects’ second studio album. It peaked and number nine on the US Billboard Pop 100 and has had over 20 million views on YouTube. In the midst of all of the stress of the final month of school, move along.

Experience “Riptide” before the overabundance of concerts this summer

By Courtney Thomas
April 14, 2015
“Riptide” by Vance Joy, was released May 21, 2013 on the album “God Loves You When You’re Dancing.” The music video is a video of all of Joy’s metaphors in a literal sense, which makes it so tasteful. Joy, an Australian singer-songwriter, wrote the song as a “coming of age” love story. The song is widely played on radios across the U.S now, and a couple of his other songs are too. “Riptide” was the single that kick-started his career here. Taylor Swift snagged him for her “1989” tour this summer, and he will be opening for her, along with the band Haim. Check out Joy’s “Riptide” and his many other songs before the concert this summer.

“Elastic Heart” forms concerns

Remember Sia’s “Chandelier?” Well she’s back with an all new hit, “Elastic Heart,” featuring the same Dance Moms star, Maddie Ziegler. But because the song also features Shia LaBeouf, the music video has gotten many bad reviews of people saying it is inappropriate.

Song of the week: Get lost in “Shut Up and Dance”

By Courtney Thomas
March 10, 2015
“Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon was released on Sept. 10, 2014 and a month after, was released on iTunes as a free single. The song is on Walk the Moon’s second studio album, “Talking is Hard.” The song was heavily influenced by artists of the ‘80s and the cheesiness of the music video shows it. There was a lot of swirling colors and bad green-screen production, but it did not fail to make me feel laugh. At one point in the video, the song stops and lead singer Nicholas Petricca starts dancing horribly. The music video is incredibly bad but it makes up for having funny parts and being such a contagious song.

Song of the week: “Summer of ’69” gets listeners in the mood for Summer

By Courtney Thomas
March 4, 2015
[T]he song “Summer of ‘69” by Bryan Adams fell into my hands today. I have heard the song before, but only today, when I was going through all my parent’s old cassettes, did I rediscover it. Adams released the song in June of 1985 on his fourth studio album, “Reckless.” The song reminds me of how desperately I want this bitterly cold winter to go away, and how much I want the warmth of summer. The song just makes me think of how fun the teenage years are supposed to be and how you should make the most of your free time. The video is a classic oldie, with the cliche angles and black and white to color shots. It was ranked number 50 on “The 100 Best Singles of the ‘80s” and had even higher rankings in Canada. The video has had over 33 million views since being released.

Song of the week: ‘Uptown Funk’ is still number one

By Courtney Thomas
February 25, 2015
Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars, was released Nov, 14, 2014. The song has an early ‘80s feel with an electric funk sound. It has reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The music video was released on Nov. 19, 2014 to YouTube. The video has the same feel as the song, old-school, ‘80s music. The song makes Mars seem like a “ladies man,” and that is exactly how he is portrayed in the music video. “Uptown Funk” is one of the catchiest songs of 2015, so far.

Song of the week: Experience the new single “FourFiveSeconds”

By Courtney Thomas
February 18, 2015
The song “FourFiveSeconds” by Rihanna, Kayne West, and Paul McCartney was released on Jan. 24, 2015. It is the lead single for Rihanna’s eighth studio album. The song is something different from what Rihanna and West usually do; it is an acoustic song. On the Billboard Hot 100, “FourFiveSeconds” peaked at number six. The black and white music video appears to have been filmed in a small box. The video starts off with a silhouette of Rihanna and West’s that is featured periodically throughout the video. The song itself is catchy and so different from the normal for these artists that you cannot help but love it.
