Senate Bill 16 threatens district funding

By Devin Martin
November 18, 2014
Every day, students walk throughout Huntley High School, Conley Elementary, and even Marlowe Middle School. But what if one day, your education was the best than the previous day? What if it continued to grow worse by the day? The Committee of the Whole (COW) Board of Education for District 158 have a growing concern. This is about Senate Bill 16. Senate Bill 16 was proposed last July to be able to fund public education for the state of Illinois. This was meant to improve, never to hurt our state. But as this bill keeps going on, the damage builds to a “Path of Darkness,” said board member Micheal J. Fleck.

South Park season 18 episode 6 review

By Rachel Brands
November 18, 2014
South Park releases its sixth episode titled “Freemium Isn’t Free.” The episode lunges right into the plot when the first scene is of Jimmy telling Kyle to download the new Terrance and Phillip game because it’s “totally free!” Kyle plays the game and quickly discovers it is free (only not really) because it is also totally stupid. Stan, however, can not get enough of the game and is soon in trouble with his parents for spending over $400 playing it.

Song of the Week: Blank Space

By Courtney Thomas
November 18, 2014
Released to radios on Nov. 10, Blank Space by Taylor Swift is currently number one on iTunes. The song makes fun of her dating life in the media lately, and the video follows in perfect sync. This is depicting her as a serial dater. In the video, her and her boyfriend are running around in a palace. In the video, Swift makes fun of herself by having the mascara run down her face and smashing her boyfriends car in. I personally think that it is one of her better music videos and better songs with its catchy electric pop sound. The video is the perfect depiction of the media’s view of her love life from her perspective. I love that she can take all the rumors and turn it into a music video with over 48 million views in one week.

South Park season 18 episode 7 review

By Rachel Brands
November 17, 2014
South Park screwed with the minds of its fans everywhere with “Grounded Vindaloop.” The episode starts as a seemingly classic Cartman-messes-with-Butters scenario when Cartman tricks Butters into thinking he is in a virtual reality, when really he is wandering around town wearing goggles and a set of headphones.

St. Vincent Movie Review

By Rachel Brands
November 13, 2014
“St. Vincent” is a dramedy written and directed by Theodore Melfi. The film stars Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy as neighbors Vincent and Maggie. Maggie is a single mother who moves in next door to Vincent along with her young son Oliver. The two get off to a bad start immediately when the movers Maggie hired inadvertently destroy Vincent’s fence and rip a branch off a tree in his yard. Times are tough for Maggie and Oliver, causing Maggie to work crazy hours and leaving Oliver alone most of the time. An incident at school where the other boys steal Oliver’s phone and house keys leads to him spending the afternoon at Vincent’s until his mother gets home from work.

Song of the Week: Centuries

By Courtney Thomas
November 13, 2014
[R]eleased Sept. 9, Centuries by Fall Out Boy has already made the US Billboard Hot 100. The music video takes place in Pompeii with the band as gladiators. The four of them are pinned against a huge bodybuilder, and nothing is going in their favor. But they put their heads together and “turn dust into gold” and beat the guy. They were “remembered” for centuries as legends. The song is catchy and would be a great pump up song before a big game. Centuries is on Fall Out Boy’s sixth album, set to be released in early 2015.

Movie Review: Jessabelle

By Cierra Felton
November 13, 2014
[L]ionsgate releases yet another successful horror film directed by Kevin Greutert, director of Saw VII and Saw VI. Like the Saw movies, Jessabelle is sure to confuse you until the last 5 minutes of the movie. The majority of the movie keeps you guessing, and once you are sure you have it figured out, there is another twist added.

It is 1941. Adolf hitler has marched into Poland and declared the second World War on the entire western world. The Russians fend against the Third Reich’s Nazis from tainting the motherland. At home, the USA is recovering from the Great Depression, and in the wake of the day that shall forever live in infamy. Also America and its might have declared war on Japan and have vowed to stop the atrocities Hitler is committing across Europe. In the desolate sands of French-occupied Morocco, Casablanca lies in all of its glory. This a city of fine gin, forgotten dreams and a passage to the New World. Casablanca is a place of tranquility, where sworn enemies trade war secrets and smoke cigars.

Movie Review: Big Hero 6

By Ryan Mills
November 13, 2014
“Big Hero 6” will take viewers on an emotional roller coaster, effortlessly shifting among action-adventure, comedy, and drama. One will find themselves in awe of the amazing action scenes, laughing hysterically at the playful humor, and even shedding tears for 14-year-old Hiro Hamada. The movie sends the viewers off to the futuristic city of “San Fransokyo,” a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo. Hiro Hamada is not an ordinary 14-year-old, he is a genius, he finished high school at the age of 13 and is a robotics expert and enthusiast. He lives with his aunt Cass and his older brother Tadashi.
