Huntley is under a Winter Storm Warning

This is a weather alert from the Voice newsroom. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Storm and is predicting >7 inches across the Chicagoland area and possibly more in localized areas until midnight Friday night.

The NWS also warns that visibility could be reduced at times and to use extreme caution while driving.

District 158 sent an automated phone call to parents Friday afternoon saying that all school district sponsored activities had been cancelled.

“At IDOT [Illinois Department of Transportation] we take snow and ice issues very seriously and we want drivers to also take it very seriously,” said Ann Schneider, IDOT Secretary. “We spend months preparing for winter weather so we would also like drivers to be thinking about what they can do to prepare. We are advising them to use extreme caution, they need to decrease their speed, increase their following distance, and build some extra time into their schedules.”

She also says to have an Emergency Kit in your car.

“Wind chills are going to be significantly low so we encourage drivers to be prepared for the unfortunate event if they would get stuck so they need to make sure that they have a survival kit in their car,” she said.

The survival kit should include:
  • Blankets
  • Food
  • Small Shovel
  • Water

The Village of Huntley maintains 128 miles of roads. As a reminder parking is prohibited between the hours of 2:00 am and 6:00am. Also parking on any village street within eight hours after a snowfall of at least 2 inches is also prohibited.

“I want encourage everyone to drive safely and to give themselves plenty of time.” she said. “It is really important to take this weather seriously.”

The Voice will be following this storm and will provide a traffic updates on road conditions. You can receive text alerts by texting ‘follow huntleytraffic‘ to 40404.
