The members of Science Olympiad – nickname “Sci-o” by the kids – meet every Thursday in room 2122.
The atmosphere in the room is a warm and friendly one. The members mingle and chat and no one is left out. All participants seem completely at ease with one another.
Science Olympiad is practically unheard of in Huntley High School, much to the disappointment of the active members.
“It helps you not only grow as a person but you get better in fields of science, if you’re interested in it,” said co-president senior Hiam Hafizuddin.
The members of Science Olympiad filled in names on a chart during their meeting. The chart determines who will be participating in what subject for regionals. There is almost a strategic way they put it together, navigating around inabilities to go to regionals and who is better at what subject.
“We work so hard to get medals,” said Hafizuddin.
Although the atmosphere is happy and laid-back, the members are focused on the making of the chart. They work through problems with the occasional funny outburst from a member who volunteers someone else.
The members are interested in the club, and are happy about being there and feeding their passion for science.
“I have created so many friends here,” said junior Aboorva Sivasankaran. “I get to experience these different types of events that I wouldn’t normally do. It’s fun.”
The students involved in the activity vary in age and seemingly everything else, yet they all bond over their love of Science Olympiad and their strong friendships built because of the club.
“What makes it special is because I’m with all my people,” said junior Logan Jackson.
There is only one more Science Olympiad event before regionals and that takes place on March 8.
