The Raiders Girl’s basketball team won the Fox Valley Conference Regional Championship for the seventh time in the past nine years. The final score against Rockford was 60-15, they will advance in the state tournament.
“I’m just so proud of our kids, just the manner in which they came out,” says head coach Steve Raethz.
The Raiders got off to a hot start against Rockford East by ending the first quarter on a 14-0 run. Then only allowing five points in the second quarter.
By the end of the half, juniors Ali Andrews and Kayla Barreto combined for 23 points of Huntley’s 32. Playing solidly on offense and defense they also had a number of rebounds and steals.
The Raiders held Rockford scoreless for over 10 minutes of play, “maybe one of the best defensive halves we have play this season,” said Raethz, “it was like watching five defensive players playing as one.”
The bench played very well tonight as well, making a lot of contributions in the second half, playing against a lot of different types of defense. Rockford tried a man to man, a 2-3 zone, a 3-2 zone, a 1-3-1 zone, and no matter what they did, the bench and starters adjusted to the defense and put up points.
“We’re really excited to win the Regional Title here on our home floor,” says Raethz, “and ready to head to Guilford next week and contend for a Sectional Title.”
The Raiders will take on the winner of the Grant Regional, either Cary Grove or Crystal Lake South.
“We’re familiar with them, they’re familiar with us,” says Raethz, “we’ll need to prepare for either one of those teams, they both have been tough wins this year.”
