Huntley (10-15, 4-4 FVC) was riding a two-game winning streak into Friday night’s Senior Night match against the Golden Eagles of Jacobs. The teams last met on Jan. 23 at Jacobs, where the Golden Eagles defeated the Red Raiders 58-39. Huntley’s winning streak was broken, as Jacobs won 57-41.
Huntley was able to open a small lead in the first quarter thanks to junior guard Jason Zobott and senior forward Connor Boesch. Zobott hit two three-pointers and finished the quarter with 8 points. Boesch added 4 more points as the Red Raiders jumped out to a 15-13 lead.
The second quarter started strong for the Red Raiders, as the game was tied 20-20. However, Jacobs used an 8-0 run to jump out to a 28-20 lead. Huntley battled back towards the end of the quarter, and junior forward Makombo Tizora’s three-pointer narrowed the deficit to 28-25 at the half.
The second half was disastrous for Huntley. Jacobs used a 12-5 run in the third quarter to take a 40-30 lead heading into the final 8 minutes. Huntley had no answer for Jacobs sophomore Cameron Krutwig, who dominated the glass and used his size to score in bunches in the paint.
Jacobs continued their hot shooting into the fourth quarter, where their 9-3 run gave them a commanding 49-33 lead with just over 4 minutes left in the game. Foul trouble began to plague Huntley’s starters and Jacobs senior guard Cris Orange punished the Red Raiders at the foul line. Although Huntley managed to bring the game to within 10 with just under 3 minutes to go, Jacobs iced the game with a quick 6-0 run.
