It déjà vu for Huntley football on Friday night.
In its game against Cary-Grove, Huntley’s sophomore football team had a come-from-behind loss in the final minutes of its game, just like it did in its game last week against Jacobs. The varsity Raiders then stormed the field and did nearly the same thing they did in last week’s homecoming game.
Huntley improved this time around, only allowing four touchdowns on Friday in a 31-14 loss to Cary-Grove.
The team did what it did early last time, as quarterback Jake Brock connected with receiver John Walker to give Huntley an early 7-0 lead in the first 4 minutes of the game. Last game, Brock hit Walker for a deep gain early and Huntley took the first score as well.
Both teams went into a defensive stalemate until Cary-Grove tied the game on a 20-yard touchdown run with over 6 minutes left in the first half. Just like last week, Huntley began to turn the ball over after their first score allowed, and the defense began to unfold. After a Cary-Grove fumble recovery, Trojan quarterback Quinn Baker completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-7 lead.
Cary-Grove never looked back.
Last game, Huntley allowed a late score in the second half as they did the same against the Trojans. This time it was a field goal in the waning seconds on the first half to give Cary-Grove a 10-point lead.
After Cary’s quick rushing touchdown by Baker to start the second half, Huntley answered back with a 49-yard connection between Brock and receiver Bryce Beschorner and then a 2-yard touchdown carry to bring the game within 10 points again, 24-14.
The Trojans scored on a rushing touchdown in the first minute of the fourth quarter and shut down the Huntley offense to close out the game, 31-14.
The Raiders dropped to an overall record of 1-6 on the season while the Trojans improved to 5-2. Huntley’s last home game of the season is next week against Woodstock.
