Huntley defeated Hampshire in convincing fashion Thursday night winning five out of six matches. It was the first home conference meet of the season and Huntley had momentum on their side throughout the night.
Early on, Huntley was all over Hampshire, starting off with senior Jimmy Pellegrino getting a pin in the first period, winning with a score of 5-0.
The high energy continued for the Red Raiders, as sophomore Sam Spencer continued with double take downs on his opponent. At the start of the third period, Spencer performed one last take down, resulting in a technical fall and a win for Spencer with a score of 20-5.
Senior Zach Spencer endured a longer match, but just like his brother, his ability to escape and come back with a double take down powered him to a win of 13-9.
Hampshire managed to get their first win as freshman Nathan Larson got a pin in the third period, but it was their varsity wrestler against sophomore Eli Rendon.
”I had some backups in,” head coach Benjamin Bertelsman said.” But I still have high expectations for all our guys all the time.”
Huntley then went back to their varsity wrestlers led by senior Luke Loprieno and sophomore David Ferrante.
Loprieno was first of the two and maintained dominance the whole match. Never letting his opponent get any control, Loprieno was able to grind out a win in the third period.
During the last match of the evening David Ferrante shined. Although his opponent hung in tough in the first period, it was all Ferrante from there on with countless reversals and takedowns, eventually leading to an 11-0 win to cap off a great night for the Red Raiders.
“I was dominating my positions on top and I did a good job on my reversals and getting out” Ferrante said. “Overall as a team, Hampshire’s not that deep, but there is still room for improvement for all of us.”
The Red Raiders will look to keep that momentum going in their next meet Saturday Dec. 16.
