Both the Red Raiders (17-2 overall, 6-0 FVC) and Chargers (12-7, 5-1) headed into the game with undefeated records in the Valley division.
The Raiders started the game off looking like anything but the team that has dominated Fox Valley Conference teams all season, and turned the ball over frequently as the Chargers dominated most of the quarter, ending it up 14-10.
The Chargers continued to lead in the second quarter behind stout defense and capitalizing on more poor shots and turnovers by the Raiders. Huntley players began to show frustration, and trailed 19-20 going into the half.
In the opening minutes of the third quarter it seemed that Crown would continue to lead Huntley, but adjustments by Huntley coach Marty Manning paid off as the Raiders finally took the lead with 3:47 remaining in the quarter. Consistent free throw shooting from Fredrick helped to solidify the lead, and Huntley found itself going into the fourth up 29-28.
Things got ugly in the fourth quarter, with numerous hard fouls on the court and individualized chants from the Dundee-Crown student section off. Five points by sophomore Amanze Egekeze in the quarter helped Huntley hang onto the lead, and survive a late comeback attempt by the Chargers to win the game 45-40, and take sole control of the Valley division.
Huntley will play at Praire Ridge on Tuesday night, and then at McHenry on Friday night.
