Each page is covered in soft strokes of ink with halftone shading, along with speech bubbles filled with lighthearted dialogue. The unique art style is captivating; previous stress and worries have paused, all attention on the manga in hand.
The story follows two high school girls in the Student Council Club, Yuu Koito and Touko Nanami, whose love for each other starts out as a small bud, blooming into a flower over time.
In volume one, main protagonist Yuu Koito, first year student at Tohmi Higashi High School, is debating which extracurricular club to join. When she discovers the Student Council Club room, club president Touko Nanami falls in love with her at first sight, despite the two just meeting.
Suddenly, Touko steals Yuu’s first kiss!
Yuu, although confused by Touko’s declaration of love, pursues a friendship with her. Through out their time together, Yuu’s feelings of romance ignite sparks.
The later chapters of the series reveal that Yuu confesses to Touko, resulting in the two girls becoming a couple.
In an interview with Excite News, author Nakatani Nio is asked, “What kind of existence is Bloom Into You for you, Nakatani-san? Or, as you continue to work as a mangaka, what kind of existence will it become for you?”
“From here on out, I might be able to write a lot of manga, and some of it might also become huge hits, but I think it will be the manga that represents me,” Nio said. “I feel like it was a manga that feels exactly like a debut work. You could say I drew myself into it, or I drew what was inside myself.”
With the limited amount of LGBTQ+ media out in the world, “Bloom Into You” is a hidden gem.
