Some sudents see high school from a whole different perspective, capturing moments through a camera lens. Junior Kaylee Coleman, who had once been requested to photograph Huntley’s baseball team, sparked her interest in photography by the bottom of the seventh inning.
While being a part of Huntley’s journalism program in TV Production, Coleman has learned from her peers how to gain more knowledge about her camera.
“I knew a few things from my grandpa, but the people who taught me basically everything I know were [seniors] Kathleen Nash and Will Mize,” Coleman said. “They were always available to help and answered when I needed them.”
Her outgoing and friendly personality allowed her to get better at what she was passionate about.
“The biggest way I’ve helped her grow is helping her know what settings to use on her camera,” senior Will Mize said.
Kaylee has taken criticism and new information from more experienced students and developed an outstanding work ethic that has shown to those around her.
“In general, Kaylee has shown a ton of growth from last year in terms of passion, creativity, and talent, which showcases her leadership skills in photography,” TV Production adviser Lauren Teeter said. “She is involved in outside activities on top of her schoolwork and even has more work than a normal staffer. So, for her to build as a photographer in addition to that is remarkable.”
Kaylee showcases her work mainly through her Instagram page, @kaylees_kamera_, but behind social media is what matters most for her. She gets a whole new perspective that an average student would likely never experience.
“The best part is getting a new perspective on all of the different sports,” Coleman said. “I’ve become really close with a lot of other photographers and built relationships with athletes. They all reach out about different games and events and everything about it is so fun.”
As she embarks on her senior year, she plans to continue to photograph Huntley’s sports. She hopes to carry her devotion into her college career and has her mind set on sports communications with the incorporation of photography.
