After many successful meets this season, the Huntley girls track team holds their heads up high as they know what role they have in the area.
On March 6, 2025, Huntley put on their spikes, set up blocks, and prepared to host a home meet against Harvard, Hampshire, Crystal Lake South, and Jacobs High School.
When it comes to meet days in Huntley track, only a select few girls are usually able to attend, as the team cannot take everyone with the high enrollment. This specific meet allowed all of the athletes on the team to feel the adrenaline and compete on the track.
“When you have a team of around 100 girls, you need meets like this so you get a chance for everyone to be included,” head track coach Jason Monson said. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone.”
The meet began shortly after set up. Long jump started early as many athletes are long jumpers, followed by triple jump, shot put, high jump, and pole vault.
Huntley track assistant coaches noticed the most progress this meet with the athletes who participated in triple jump and shot put. Sophomore Tife Amu made her PR going from 8.5 meter to 9.7 meter jumps in just a month.
“It was a great meet for me and all of the Huntley girls,” Amu said. “I am so happy to have PR’d in the triple jump and the 60 meter dash and hope to continue seeing improvement.”
Many athletes in shot put were able to throw farther than the meet before them and felt empowered to do so as they each cheered each other on between throws.
“I felt so nervous. I thought I wouldn’t do well, but when my teammates told me that I could do well, I did really good,” junior Megan Kiggundu said.
The girls face their toughest race in the 4×200 meter relay. A relay with Tife Amu, Casandra Soroka, Opeyemi Aluko, and Olivia Pontious takes a close second behind Hampshire.
Distance athletes were challenged to run in the 4×200 meter race, and Lena Jurczyk placed first in the 1600 meter race.
Some of Huntley’s fastest sprinters were set to run a 4×400 meter relay. A relay with Dominique Johnson, Abbie Williams, Emily Byers, and Brianna Kigongo takes first place at their home invite.
