This year’s girls golf season will be one to remember, one for the history books. The team accomplished something Huntley girls golf has never done before: they qualified for sectionals as a team.
Members of the girls golf team had qualified for sectionals before, but only as individuals. This year, seniors Lauren Gorecki, Gabby Young, and Danielle Smith returned to sectionals, but this time with the rest of their team.
Even though no girls qualified for the state meet at their sectional Oct. 8, they still gained their coach’s approval.
“I think our girls played very well; there was just awful conditions,” said head coach Ann Christiansen. “We will be back next year and hope for better conditions.”
Qualifying for sectionals was a great way to finish a successful season for the Red Raiders, who had a 6-2 record in all dual meets and a 5-2 record in conference. They only lost to golf powerhouses Crystal Lake Central and Prairie Ridge. At the Fox Valley Conference Tournament, the girls placed third.
“Our girls really came together early on in the season,” said Christiansen. “Everyone started shooting in the 40s, making us so successful.”
The best dual meet for the Red Raiders came against one of Huntley’s biggest conference rivals, Jacobs. The team shot 180, the lowest round they would have all year.
“Our team is very cohesive, they all get along very well,” said Christiansen. “It was very fun to watch this team.”
Although Gorecki, Young, Smith, and Jenny Perrone played their last season for the Red Raiders this year, sophomores Gillian Young and Leah Virzi will be back next year with varsity experience, along with two incoming freshmen that have golfed before.
“I really enjoyed watching all of these girls grow over the years,” said Christiansen. “There is really a big difference from their freshmen year to now.”
