Huntley High School has yet another new club- the Student Athletic Leadership Team which began early in the 2012-2013 school year. Comprised of between 70 and 80 members from all different sports and age levels, the Student Athletic Leadership Team, or SALT for short, gives student-athletes a way to become better leaders in their given sport.
In order to be chosen for SALT, student-athletes had to be nominated by their coach early on this year. Each varsity coach selected four players from their team that could be in any grade or on any team within the program.
SALT meets every late-start Wednesday at 7:15 in room W13 and is run by Athletic Director Michelle Jakubowski, Assistant Athletic Director Chris Maxedon, and track and boys golf coach Jim Rolando.
“It is important for student-athletes to have a voice,” said Jakubowski. “SALT is a good way to make things better in the Athletic Department and a good way to build leadership skills.”
These students are allowed to voice their opinion on the Student Athletic Handbook and on the different ways that they can become better leaders in their sports. Through these discussions, these leaders help each other deal with the everyday challenges of being on a sport.
“I really like that there is people from all different sports and activities brought together,” said junior Kira Frendreis. “It really helps us all become better leaders and make a difference in our teams atHuntleyHigh School.”
Frendreis is one of the 70-plus members of the Student Athletic Leadership Team, and represents girls bowling. By having a wide variety of members, the Student Athletic Leadership Team aspires to achieve great things, and some members will even be attempting the Polar Plunge this winter after fundraising.
