Huntley High School english department teacher Rochelle Hewlett who has spent all 22 of her teaching years at Huntley has tremendously influenced many of her students. I took a trip to her inviting classroom in the freshman hallway to find out more about this teacher we love.
I decided to teach because …
When asked why she teaches Hewlett said “June, July, and August,” she said while laughing. “I remembered growing up and feeling like my teachers weren’t passionate and it was just a job to them. I wanted to change that, I wanted to have kids want to be in my class where they could learn and have fun,” she added with a warm smile.
The thing I enjoy most about teaching is …
“My students,” Hewlett began her face lighting up instantly when asked what she enjoyed most about teaching, “The relationship I develop with my students.”
My best teaching experience was …
“I don’t have just one,” she said. “Each and every year is different. I love meeting around 135 new people every year and getting to know and build a relationship with them.”
The most daring thing I’ve ever done was …
“I’m kind of a chicken,” Hewlett began chuckling and she took a moment to think. “I really think that I’m a big baby because I don’t think I do anything daring. Oh, I zip lined across Red Rock Canyon, but you’d never catch me jumping out of a plane or anything.”
What motivates me to work hard is …
“The joy on students’ faces when they learn something I’ve taught them and their appreciation for years to come.”
What makes me laugh the most is …
“Witty comebacks whether from my friends, my family, or students,” Hewlett said with a smile on her face. “I also like people who live in the moment and enjoy the moment.”
What really makes me angry is …
“Disrespect”.
