The runners crouch, feet twitching, heart thrumming. The air is buzzing, the anticipation is almost too much. Suddenly there is a loud crack. The gun to release the girls is fired and the runners push off their starting blocks with all their might. Teammates cheer and parents shout, the first track event has just begun. On Friday, March 14, Huntley’s girls track and field team attended the Bud Swanson Invite at Glenbard North High School.
Huntley’s Varsity team placed fourth out of eight. This is an accomplishment since this is only their second meet, and for the past three they have been placing fifth and under.
“I’m very happy with the start of the year. The girls’ performances were very good especially since it was indoors. Indoor competitions have a much different feel than outdoors.” said girls track and field coach Shawn Nordeen.
The expectations were high, the sprinters and distance runners were supposed to do well, performances were supposed to stay consistent, and energy was to be positive. The girls managed to meet all of them. Especially senior Courtney Kampert, who vaulted 10 feet, an improvement of 1 foot, in pole vault, and junior Macey Tramblay, who placed first in hurdles.
“I’m very excited for this year, we are meeting all our goals. Now we just hope to place first in championships since we placed second last year.” said Nordeed. Their next competition will be Tuesday, March 18 at Sycamore.
