In 2003, she was on Broadway. Draped in black clothing, covered from head-to-toe in green make up, she played Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
10 years later, Disney welcomed her. She played the role of the famous ice queen, Elza, known for the song “Let it Go.”
From “Wicked,” to “Frozen,” Idina Menzel has achieved every artists dream. Sure, one can create a few albums here and there, but Menzel was talented enough to expand her horizons beyond the studio.
Also being featured in the television series “Glee,” Menzel’s voice and looks seemed similar to another actress’s on set- Lea Michele.
Since Menzel has already reached many milestones in her career, it is easy to think an artist like herself could start to get a little rusty.
“She hasn’t made an album in eight years”, I thought. “She must be done.”
I was proven wrong.
Menzel’s album “Holiday Wishes” is stunning. Normally, I am not a fan of Christmas albums, since it is all just covers of classic songs we have heard time, and time again.
However, Menzel’s powerful voice fits perfectly with the songs, and changes it just enough to make it her own; while still being an album you want to listen to while sitting by the fireplace.
Artists like Kelly Clarkson and Michael Bublé have covered the famous “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, but there was absolutely nothing spectacular about it. Yes, they are great artists, but it was just a simple cover that did nothing but put me to sleep.
Given that it is typically seen as a slow and mellow song, every artist should create something that is their own. Menzel did just that, and her cover of the song was unique; without taking away the classic vibe that everyone gets while listening to holiday music.
The third track, “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” stood out among the rest. Featuring Bublé, the two took the song to a different level that no other singer can reach.
However, it was hard to listen through some of the lyrics. Menzel and Bublé go back and forth with each other during the song, which made it difficult to follow at points. Fortunately, the creativity shines throughout and does not bring the album down at all.
“Holiday Wishes” is an album I look forward to listening to again this Christmas season, and it has made me a fan of Menzel and her work.
She has proven that she is unlike any other artist. From Broadway, to Disney, to creating her own Christmas album, the 43-year-old New York native does not seem to be fading any time soon.
