Friday night’s football game was geared to set two teams on a collision course. Huntley was fighting for a Homecoming win while Jacobs looked to stay undefeated this season.
Huntley looked to deliver another victory coming off its first win of the season against Dundee-Crown, and it started the game hot. After a fourth-down stop by Huntley’s defense to start out the game, quarterback Jake Brock connected with John Walker to the Eagles’ 9-yard line. After a quick handoff, Brock kept the ball himself and ran it in for a touchdown, giving the Raiders a 7-0 lead after a successful extra point.
Jacobs fired back on the next drive, with star running back Caz Zyks scoring on a 6-yard-touchdown run. Kicker Matt Fahey tied the game at 7.
After back-to-back three-and-outs, the Eagles picked up the pace after they recovered Huntley’s muffed snap to end the first quarter. Jacobs took the lead after scoring a quick seven points to begin the second quarter.
Jacobs kept the heat coming, with a 2-yard-touchdown run by Kyle Wright to bring the score to 21-7. After an interception Johnny Holbrook, Jacobs quarterback Jason Judson connected with receiver Nick Furtak for a 63-yard-touchdown pass. After a missed extra point, Jacobs had a commanding 27-7 lead.
After Homecoming performances by the Marching Red Raiders, varsity poms, and all of the cheerleaders, the Raiders looked ready to come back. They went three-and-out, however, and Jacobs picked up another touchdown to make the game 34-7.
Zyks showed his star power after finding a gaping hole and running the ball in for another touchdown which made the game 41-7. Huntley came right back, as safety Tyler Schwartz returned the next kickoff for a touchdown.
A Jacobs defensive back made the biggest defensive play of the game by intercepting and returning a Huntley pass from the end zone for over 105 yards. Jacobs led 48-13.
Huntley went on to lose 48-19 and start the season 1-5 overall. The Raiders now sit at the bottom of the Valley Conference standings, only ahead of Dundee-Crown. The Golden Eagles sit at the top.
The Eagles are set to take on Prairie Ridge next week to determine the Valley’s last undefeated team. The Raiders will host the 4-2 Cary-Grove Trojans.
