The Cubs have a good team and many analysts have them either winning the division or taking a wild card spot, which is not far off, but I don’t know if they can do it this year.
There has been a lot of talk about the Cubs second baseman prospect, Javier Baez, but he just has not shown any improvement to his plate discipline and he still strikes out way too much. His fielding has been suspect at best and he hasn’t changed his approach at all. He could turn it around, but he may be a bust.
Jon Lester, the Cub’s $150 million man, is an outstanding southpaw, but may be the only lefty in the MLB who can’t pickoff a runner. With David Ross, the 37 year old, catching for him there might be some trouble on the base paths. Lester can’t be perfect, and if everybody he allows on gets to scoring position for free, the Cubs are going to have a lot of problems keeping other teams off the scoreboard.
The Cubs have a lot of bright spots though, Jorge Soler from Cuba is a powerhouse with huge potential, but even he has brought up questions of experience.
Kris Bryant was ranked the #2 prospect in America by ESPN and is only days away from being brought up. What most people consider to be the future face of the Chicago Cubs will be making an impact soon. Taking over at third base for Tommy La Stella who is only hitting .167 this season.
Dexter Fowler has been more than a pleasant surprise so far this season and while the Cubs are in first place for now, they need other players to start stepping up their games. Kris Bryant has to make an impact and Baez needs to start hitting better.
The Chicago Cubs will be a contender soon, but the Curse of the Goat will not be broken this season. I would be shocked if the Cubs made it to the playoffs.
