The HHS Math Team studies for the Grant HS Invite (L. Jenkins)
On Dec. 3 the Huntley High School Math Team competed in the Grant High school Invite. It was yet another successful completion for the team.
The team arrived at Grant High school ready to compete, but their team was very small. They all went into it thinking it would be a tough competition.
“We received an invitation to the Grant HS invite after they attended our invite in November,” Math Team coach and math teacher Laura Jenkins said. “We gladly accepted, even though we realized that we would have a thin crew since many of our students were attending the Student Council retreat and a speech tournament that were taking place the same day.”
Despite a smaller team, the HHS Math Team swept the competition.
“To our surprise, our team did remarkably well!” Jenkins said.
Sophomore Brody Lauer and freshman Kayla Yakaminsky took first place in the Fresh/Soph two-person divison. HHS took first place in the Fresh/Soph eight-person divison and Geometry Team.
HHS also took third in the categories of Algebra I and Pre-Calculus. Taking third in Algebra I was a surprise, since the judges only take the top four scores and HHS only had three.
Senior Lucas Myint and sophomore Brody Lauer also placed in individual divisions.
“We did very well under the circumstances,” junior AJ Lowenstein said. “We are hoping to have the whole team qualify for state for the second year in a row.”
Be sure to look for future HHS Math Team events, they are sure to do extremely well this year.
“Regarding the future, I think we’re going to have a strong team this year. Just looking at how well we did with only a skeleton crew,” Jenkins said. “I’m excited about the future events; Fox Valley Conference Meet (end of Jan.), Hononegah Invite (end of Jan.) and Regionals (end of Feb.).”
