A Great Start for All
October 1, 2017
“The First Time She Drowned” was the start of Kerry Kletter’s career on May 15, 2016. Not only did it add to the collection of young adult books that confront mental illness, but it should be considered the ruler that all other young adult books should be measured with.
Even though you may not be personally affected by mental illness, it still has something to relate to. Such as the difficult relationship between Cassie, the main character, and her mom or the love interest she has with a fellow student.
Right off the bat the book starts off with imagery so intense that you swear it’s a photograph instead of a book you’re holding in your hand. The imagery and use of literary devices is really what makes this book so remarkable, but what else can you expect from a contemporary young adult novel?
Throughout this book you follow Cassie O’Malley’s journey as she struggles with the commotion of life. Including her difficult love hate relationship with her mother, trauma from her childhood, and being released from a mental hospital before starting her first year at college.
Not only does is this book a great read, but it really makes you reflect on things that you hold most valuable in life like friends and family. After completing this lengthy piece of literature, I sat in my bed for about an hour contemplating about whether or not I was making the best decision in life. This was after of course I gave my mom the biggest hug ever.
Whether or not you’re an avid reader or you just like to sit and stare at the pretty covers, this book is a great start for everyone. It will make you cry, laugh, and most importantly think.
