Read and Relax: “Green”
December 11, 2019
Green
Never was there life
Besides these plants in their pacts
An entire living society?
No, left only were their tracks
Whatever lead to their downfall
Must have been something vast
Or maybe it was themselves
Their oblivion unsurpassed
Only something gradual and dark
Can result in such a void
If only had they known
What has now been destroyed
An entire society so unknowing
Of what was on its way
Had they known, what would happen?
Would they really just be okay?
Or would they stand tall
Against a world unforgiving
For their future generations
For us, an entire world still living
And yet, here we stand
Or maybe we won’t much longer
Constantly pushing on our home
As if it were any stronger
But it’s not
It’s no longer just prediction
We need to do something
Or we’ll all be reduced to fiction
Inspiration Behind the Poem!
The holidays are right around the corner, but it’s always this time of year when I can only think about one thing: the environment. I know… it’s a little weird, but Earth’s well-being has always been a big influence in my life. And, while the winter season wasn’t what inspired me to write this. This poem is still all about the environment as it depicts a world where the human race wiped itself out with its own pollution, leaving nothing but what would now be in ruins.
You may be wondering what this has to do with the holidays. Well, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, nearly 200 million pounds of turkey end up in our nation’s landfills, not to mention all the other food waste that once found itself on your Thanksgiving table. On top of that, so much material waste is produced after the winter holidays. From wrapping paper to plastic packaging, it’s difficult to keep track of everything, especially with the holidays themselves being hectic behind all the planning.
Still, the last thing I want is for someone to stress themselves more to take the environment into consideration. After all, helping out the Earth isn’t as difficult as some people say it is. Something you may think of as small makes a bigger impact than you’d realize. For instance, it’ll take decades for a gift’s plastic packaging to decompose, but it’ll only take you seconds to recycle it. So, this holiday season, give the gift of a clean environment to yourself and your future generations. I know they’ll appreciate it.
