A major fire broke out Monday evening on Huntley/Dundee road between Kreutzer and Galligan Rd. in Gilberts. Smoke was seen coming out of a white house on the southwest side of the property where fire crews were present. According to numerous neighbors and Google Maps the location may have been home to Huntley Equine and Small Animal Veterinarian Office.
Crews from all over McHenry, Kane and Boone counties were dispatched to the scene. Huntley Fire Protection District was in command with help from Kane County Emergency Management.
One of the major hurdles for the crews was the lack of water. Water tank trucks headed into downtown Gilberts where a water tower was present according to a Kane County Emergency Management Official. They also went into Huntley by St. Mary’s Church where a fire hydrant was present.
According to the website of Huntley Equine and Small Animal the office was open during the time the fire started. It is unknown if they were in fact open and people or animals were inside.
Tuesday afternoon fire alarms in the house could still be heard from the outside. A horse was sitting in the field adjacent to the building. The entire upper floor was black from the outside of the house. Nicor gas was at the scene around 4:30 pm as well. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
