On June 17, Katy Perry announced that she would be coming out with her first single in four years. Then on July 10, she made sure all social media platforms knew that the 2010 pop star was making a comeback with an album called “143.”
Perry became popular with her famous album “Teenage Dream” back in 2010, but since then, Perry made a turn with her music in 2020.
Instead of her music being the pop icon we know and love her for, her music turned into lots of autotune. In 2020, Perry released an album called “Smile” that did not get a lot of attention from social media or the Top 100. But ever since she released “143” she has been getting a lot of social media coverage, but not the kind people want.
Before Perry released her new, album she performed at the VMAS, she played some of her greatest hits such as “Dark Horse,” “E.T.,” ”Teenage Dream,” “I Kissed a Girl,” “California Girls,” “Firework,” and two songs from “143” called “Lifetimes” and “I’m His, He’s Mine” featuring Doechii. While performing “I’m His, He’s Mine” with Doechii at the VMAS, she started performing sexual movements with her, for example, they were almost about to kiss while singing.
Perry is getting hate on social media about this performance because the song they were singing was about a man, not about a woman. She has not said anything to the public about this as she is trying to keep her peace and turn off her social media, which she said to USAtoday.
She also has been getting hate because of her music video “Women’s World.” Some people feel that her music is becoming very millennial. Her younger fans are still listening to her greatest hits, not the new music she has been releasing.
The album has 11 songs and the album name, “143,” is Perry’s angel number, which also means “I love you.” While writing this album she was going through a hard time with family, and this number kept coming up everywhere for her. The main songs on “143” are “Women’s World,” “I’m His, He’s Mine,” and “Lifetimes.” “Gimme Gimme” has a feature with 21 Savage, “Gorgeous” has a feature with Kim Petras, and “Artificial” has a feature with JID.
Perry’s album does have a few good songs, such as “Gorgeous” which has a fun, upbeat vibe and tells a story about going to a club with your best friends and living life to the fullest. Another song that has an amazing beat is “Gimme Gimme,” but 21 Savage adds so much dimension to the song.
All of the songs on Perry’s album are upbeat and fun, but the songs have a lot of autotune and are very repetitive. We cannot help but wonder where this path of new music will lead Perry.
