Opening the page of a fresh new book with no expectations of anything incredible, readers are quickly proven wrong. They are instantly transported back in time to the ‘70s of classic rock, smoke-filled rooms, bell bottoms, and record playing.
“Daisy Jones & The Six” is just that. A book by popular and award-winning author Taylor Jenkins Reid tells a thrilling story about a rockstar band of the ‘70s.
Starting out presenting the main character, Daisy Jones, the reader is taken through a flashback of Daisy’s neglectful childhood and how her struggles ultimately led her to find her passion for singing.
Her passion leads her on a wild journey, and after her first single blows up, she is signed to a record company alongside the other main characters. Billy Dune is Daisy’s singing partner, and her other band members are Warren Rojas, Eddie Roundtree, Graham Dunne, and Karen Sirko.
Reid takes us into deep dives of each of these characters’ personalities, backstories, and struggles. Along the way, Reid forms a contrasting and heavily filled story with themes of addiction, fame, relationships, feminism, and the aesthetic of being a ‘70s rockstar.
Like many of Reid’s novels, the story’s plot starts slow and begins to thicken near the end with an explosion of drama, character changes, and realizations.
As a reader, you can form easy relationships with each character whether you like them or not. These relationships make this book all the better and all the more heartbreaking.
Some of the messages presented in the novel may not apply to everyone as they are about fame and the struggles associated with it, but there are many messages that the reader could find relatable, like negative relationships, crushes, addictions, and mental health battles.
The way Reid presents the settings creates a surreal aesthetic of the ‘70s, making the reader seem like they were transported back in time, living as a fan of the band “Daisy Jones & The Six.”
Many readers loved the setting of this book so much that they pushed the author and producers to release a television series based on this book. The series does it much justice as it perfectly portrays the emotions of the characters and the fascinating setting, while also creating a soundtrack of the band’s hit album. The book was brought to life with this series, making the experience of loving this book all the better.
