Placed in a small restaurant in Los Angeles, the camera zooms on a plaque on the counter.
Employee of the Month
Dreux Jones
She may be employee of the month, but her day is not going as well as her work ethic: a job interview at 4 p.m., stolen rent money from her best friend’s— now ex— boyfriend, and $1,500 needed by 6 p.m.
Alyssa, who is an artist, and Dreux, had their rent money stolen from Alyssa’s cheating boyfriend. Without the money, they cannot pay for their rent in “The Jungle,” or the area they live in.
Directed by Lawrence Lamont, “One of Them Days” is a comedy that features the story of two ride or die best friends who need to save themselves from becoming evicted at 6 p.m.
The humorous ups and downs of the plot keep the audience giggling. Lamont’s directing, along with the realistic acting, makes it easy to root for the protagonists and hate the antagonists.
Druex and Alyssa’s adventure is a rollercoaster with a splash of love stories. However, the storyline was nicely written so the focus stayed on the girls without making the whole movie into a love story.
There are many well-written plot twists that give the audience a wild shock factor. Each time the audience thinks the protagonists will reach their goal, they are left awestruck as it is stripped away from them. Will they be able to make $1,500 before 6 p.m., or will they get evicted?
The constant questions keep the audience invested until the end where the plot ends on a satisfying note.
Throughout the plot, Dreux and Alyssa go through everything best friends do. Their fighting and disagreements resemble how best friends do not always agree. It also shows how good friends are honest with one another, even if it may not be what they want to hear.
These two best friends are stuck together like glue, and even through their rough times, they forgive each other. The relatability between the two can be found in the audience’s relationships in their own lives.
