Welcome! I am your tour guide while we travel the world and see the many architectural wonders.
These structures are hand built and many of them took hundreds of years to complete. The world’s seven wonders include The Great Wall of China, The Taj Mahal, Chitzen Itza, Machu Picchu, the Colosseum, Petra, and Christ the Redeemer.
Today we are visiting the Taj Mahal, a mausoleum located in Agra, India.
Sitting on the bank of a river, the white ivory marble building was commissioned by an emperor named Shah Jahan.
Construction started in 1632 and it stands at about 115 feet tall on 42 acres of land.
Building the Taj Mahal took about 22 years and around 22,000 workers.
A fun fact about the construction is that it was said that over 1,000 elephants were used to transport supplies for the building.
A unique detail about the marble of the building is that it reflects the color of the sky so it appears pink in the morning, white during the day, and golden around sunset.
The cost to build the Taj Mahal in 1653 was 32 million dollars; today, it would cost 1 billion dollars to build.
The building itself is not only made of marble, but it is made up of precious stones varying in pearls, diamonds, emeralds, etc.
Over 40,000 people visit the Taj Mahal daily, and every year, an average of 7 to 8 million people come to view the beautiful structure.
After the completion of the white Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan planned on building a black version of the building as his final resting place.
The Taj Mahal is often known as the symbol of love, making it a popular place for couples to visit.
