On Jan. 31, “Dog Man” was released in theaters, nearly nine years after the beloved children’s book was published.
Written by Dav Pilkey, who is best known for his 1997 comic “Captain Underpants,” “Dog Man” was published on Aug. 30, 2016, instantly becoming a national hit, with over 60 million copies produced since its release.
After nearly a decade of waiting, fans of the best-selling novel can now grab a bucket of popcorn and enjoy the movie adaptation of one of America’s most famous comics.
“Dog Man” follows the story of a dog-human hybrid created during a failed surgery after a police officer and his loyal dog were injured in the line of duty. As Dog Man learns to live life in his new body, he fights to stop the evil Petey the Cat from cloning himself and going on a crime spree.
Overall, the movie was fast-paced, humorous, and enjoyable for everyone to watch, although it is primarily targeted for younger audiences. The animation does a wonderful job of capturing the bright world Pilkey created in his book.
Although the story is nothing mind-blowing, it still captures the attention of the audience and keeps them smiling, even throwing some heartfelt undertones of healing old wounds.
Compared to Pilkey’s previous lighthearted and goofy movie adaptation of his most famous book “Captain Underpants,” “Dog Man” allows the audience to connect to the story a little better, especially those who have already read the book.
It is especially great to watch for people who read Pilkey’s books in their childhood. It is wonderful to see something you once loved so dearly come to life before your very eyes; to see a new generation of kids enjoy something as much as you once did.
“Dog Man” is a fun-loving, lighthearted, and entertaining movie enjoyable for all audiences.
