Houseplants are great decorations to liven up rooms within your house. However, some plants may also have a practical use. Certain types of houseplants can help improve the air quality of your home.
One of the most common houseplants that improve air quality are snake plants, also known as mother-in-law’s tongue. These plants are super beginner-friendly and are by far one of the best at purifying. Snake plants do not require much light or water to live, so if you happen to forget about them they probably will not die.
Another good houseplant for air purification is the spider plant. Another common house plant, the spider plant requires bright but indirect sunlight to live. They purify specific airborne toxins such as formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. Spider plants are also easy to care for and need very little water compared to other plants. They are also non-toxic to animals, making them a good choice for households with pets.
A lesser-known, but equally effective plant is the English Ivy. Unlike other houseplants, the English Ivy can clear some mold out of the air. However, English Ivy can be difficult to take care of because of its invasive nature. They like low light but do not grow well indoors and might die off. They also can be overwatered very easily. However, because of its unique benefits it can be worth trying to keep alive.
Peace lilies are another good plant for air purification. They are good at purifying toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene out of the air. Being one of the more aesthetically pleasing purifying plants, they can even sprout long white flowers. If you have a particularly dry home, peace lilies can also promote humidity within rooms.
While houseplants liven up homes and give people a productive hobby, they also can be functional. Doing your own research to figure out what plants are right for you based on your skill level can make it more likely for you to succeed. Fortunately, many of the plants that are the most effective at purifying air are the most beginner friendly. Air purifying plants are a good and practical introduction to botany for many.
