People filled the lots outside Heineman Middle School on April 13, excited for the annual LGBTQ 5K hosted by Huntley’s RAD. The campus was decorated with a big rainbow arch and other decorations. Every few miles, there was a table set up with fun items for each milestone. Everybody wore white T-shirts, which were then painted with powder of all colors.
The RAD team celebrates minority groups every month by hosting specific events that cater to the traditions and celebrations of that group. Other RAD events have recognized African-Americans, Latin Americans, and Pacific Islanders.
“I think it’s a great way to get the community involved!” Jake Murling said.
Every month, each event has vendors that come and support the community. They sell food, crafts, and other objects that pertain to the specific minority and heritage.
These events are free to all and welcome everybody. They are an inviting club that supports each community.
“I come to the RAD events to support everyone, and I think they are so interesting,” Lacy Meyers said.
Many more people raved about the well-planned setup and fun environment that the club has. Every RAD member has a smile on their face during the events, making it feel like a very welcoming space.
Each event takes a few hours to set up, and volunteers plan every month to make it a successful celebration. Many times, some people will speak or dance to show their culture, and people can watch them for free.
“I wish they had events like this when I was in school, it’s such a fun way to be involved!” Jackie Lorti said.
With another successful RAD event completed, it is safe to say the club will stay strong and continue supporting diversity in a school and community setting.
