The daily announcements. To most, these are just the background while they take their seats for their third-hour classes. To Daniella Swim and Brian Prettyman, this is their mark at Huntley High School.
“This is a recognition that makes us involved within the school on a daily basis,” speech co-captain Brian Prettyman said. “It means a lot to us and the entire team.”
It has been a tradition for the longest time for the Speech Team captains to read the daily announcements. This is an honor for them, but it also sets an example for the school as far as public speaking goes.
The Speech Team is considered one of the more underrated clubs at Huntley, but they do not let this stop them from competing. They are very inclusive and encourage everyone to join, no matter the skill set.
“We just want to have a good environment where they can feel comfortable developing their skills,” speech team advisor Max Green said. “There are many different events, and there is so much to learn.”
Most people are generally afraid of public speaking due to the natural environment and anxiety associated with it. Green helps to develop their skills and make them feel comfortable.
“Over the years, Mr. Green has helped me very much in my speaking,” junior co-captain Daniella Swim said. “I changed events, and he helped me develop my poetry reading skills.”
This ultimately allowed her to turn the corner and win many events this season. She was even fortunate enough to go to state and compete.
Going forward, the Speech Team will continue to try to grow its team. They want to develop the skills of many students and be an example for all.
“We encourage everyone to join,” Green said. “It is really just a good time, and everyone is constantly improving.”
