The boys bowling team didn’t exactly have a relieving start to the season. It actually caused early reason to panic. They had a slow start, losing three consecutive meets to Woodstock North, Glenbard East, and St. Charles North.
From there, the team improved. They continued on to win two meets against Fenton and Rochelle.
The bumpy start was perhaps empowering.
The boys are constantly trying to improve their game,” said Coach Brian O’Neill. “With some hard work and dedication, we are looking to have a winning record.”
According to O’Neill, all of the team members have met his expectations, but there have been some that really stand out. The two single-game high scores are a 298 by junior Max Barron and junior Alex Baran’s 290. The current highest average belongs to junior Scott Bailey with a 200.
While these are tremendous scores, consistency is key in bowling. According to O’Neill, the team’s most consistent bowler is junior Anthony Kennedy. “Every alley we’ve been in, he’s performed well,” said O’Neill. Kennedy is bowling with an average of 198.
Kennedy has been bowling since he was seven years old. He got his start in Hoffman Estates at Poplar Creek Bowl, and has loved bowling ever since. His favorite part of being on the high school team is being able to meet new people, whether they are new to the program or from competing schools across the conference.
“It’s great to just have fun with people that love the sport as much as I do,” said Kennedy.
With the amount of work the players put into improving their game, they must love the sport. Because of their dedication, O’Neill expects more successes in the future.
While most of Huntley’s students are still enjoying the holidays, the boys bowling team will be hard at work to improve their current 2-5 record (as of Dec. 14) at their tournament over winter break, and at one shortly after. With an invite at Boylan High School on Dec. 28 and a meet at Rochelle on Jan. 4, they will be expected to keep up the same enthusiasm they have had throughout the season.
