After starting off the season undefeated, Huntley had a Thanksgiving Tournament at the high school over break. The championship game was the night before the holiday and Huntley had high hopes of keeping their record perfect.
The winner of the game would be the winner of the tournament and prior to the game head coach Steve Raethz only could say that he was “excited for the opportunity to play such a good team (Hononegah).”
As the game was starting, Kayla Barreto, Jessica Brock, Bethany Zornow, Sam Andrews, and Ali Andrews took the court to challenge the Hononegah Indians. The Raiders stayed undefeated with a 45-38 victory over the Indians.
Although the first quarter ended 7-3 in favor of Huntley, it was not a pretty game at that point. Many possessions ended in a turnover or a foul. The second quarter was filled with much more energy and scoring than the first. At half the Raiders led 22-17.
Huntley led for most of the game and it looked like it was all over after the third quarter, but the Indians did not give up. With three minutes left the Indians went on a 10-0 run, ended by a couple of free-throws by sophomore starting point guard Kayla Barreto. From then on, the game was all but over.
The final score was 45-38 and Huntley walked away with a perfect record. The team combined to miss only one free-throw in the game, which was no surprise given their average free-throw percentage for the season is 77 percent.
The Raiders next game is Dec. 3 vs Bartlett
