South Park screwed with the minds of its fans everywhere with “Grounded Vindaloop.”
The episode starts as a seemingly classic Cartman-messes-with-Butters scenario when Cartman tricks Butters into thinking he is in a virtual reality, when really he is wandering around town wearing goggles and a set of headphones.
Butters soon realizes he can get away with anything in this virtual reality because it is not real (or so he thinks) and uses this power to wreak havoc around town.
Cartman covers his tracks by convincing Butters he is still trapped in the virtual reality. Cartman then gets a call from Steve the Customer Service guy at Oculus who says that he is the one trapped in a virtual reality.
This is where the episode gets confusing. First it tricks you into thinking Cartman is the one stuck in a virtual world, then Kyle is, then no one is, then…what?
I do not even know.
At this point in the episode I’d stopped trying to keep track of what was going on. The humor in this episode was great, especially all of the boys’ frustrated swearing and cries of outrage, but it was so confusing I could not hardly enjoy it.
The ending of the episode made me, like the boys, question what was real. Is South Park real? All I know is I need some time to recover from that ending.
Grade: B-
Best quotation: “F****ck you!” (yes, with five us) –Basically everyone
Best character: Steve the Customer Service guy!
Funniest moment: When Butters’ dad finally got his comeuppance.
