As you walk through the gold fringe curtain, the sound of music begins to pound in your ears.  Girls’ shoes are piled up, and a group of people have merged to form a large crowd in the center of the room.  Feathers, boas, and fedoras are scattered, and flapper and gangster costumes are everywhere.

The Winter Homecoming Dance took place Thursday, Jan. 12, in the HHS Central Gym.  In their advisories, students voted for the dance’s theme, Homecoming 2.0 Gatsby Style.

Student Council set up the dance, and came up with the idea of a Best Gatsby and Daisy Contest.  The winners of this contest were Chase Burkhart and Mackenzie Mullis.  These winners received a $25 gift card to a restaurant of their choice.

“It’s another incentive to go, we thought it would just be a fun and unique thing to do for the winter dance,” said Jasmin Dhillon, Student Council vice president.

According to Dhillon, Student Council planned to have the dance based on the success of last year’s winter dance.

“We decided to do Homecoming 2.0 because it creates an incentive to go.  It’s the second Homecoming.  It gets people more excited about it,” said Dhillon.

Dhillon admits it’s not as extravagant as the first Homecoming dance, but hopes that it works well to introduce the Huntley Olympics.

“We were trying to make this winter dance in coordination to the Olympics.  It’s kind of starting the Olympics week because next week we have the pep rally.  It was a kickoff,” said Dhillon.

Student Council not only provided the contest winners with prizes, but also handed out free black and gold boas and fedoras to the first 100 people to enter the dance.

“The dance was energetic and filled with an abundant amount of joy,” said junior Cameron Sofia.
