In recent years, libraries and theaters have seemingly been losing popularity. Theaters are rarely packed, and libraries are beginning to have fewer members.
With more streaming services becoming available, moviegoers have had less of a need to visit theaters. Streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu have grown in popularity, rising to have millions of subscribers worldwide. These services have become a more affordable option for those who frequently watch movies.
Additionally, the high cost of taking a trip to the movie theater can lure away customers. The tickets and concession options tend to be out of the budget for many, especially young adults and teenagers, making the idea of going to the theater less appealing.
“When I worked at the AMC when I was younger, it was the place to be,” former AMC worker Drei Bas said. “Now when I go to watch a movie at the theater, it’s basically empty. There’s not as many kids hanging around those places anymore.”
On a similar note, libraries are also experiencing a decline in popularity. Many people are beginning to prefer the more convenient digital options on the internet, such as e-books and online libraries. These online options reduce the need for people to go visit the library or get a library card, ultimately leading to a decline in library members.
“I use an app called Libby where you check out digital versions of books from the library,” counselor Noelle Greene said. “I have a two year old, you know, so reading on my phone is mostly the way that I read.”
In order to combat this decline in popularity, libraries have been hosting events, such as art events, mini parties, and family storytimes. They have also been adapting by adding more computer and technology options at the libraries.
“I still go to the library,” Huntley library member Mikha Castro said. “The library is a great space to really help me focus, especially on my school work or when I need to study.”
Both theaters and libraries are experiencing a decline, but that does not mean that these places have to continue with this trend. These buildings can find different ways to engage and attract more members in the community, whether it is specialized events or new deals. Even with the increase of digital options, libraries and theaters can still stay relevant.
