Staring at the gleaming kitchen wall, a burst of inspiration ran through her. She hurriedly armed herself with the paint and pencils her parents had bought her for Christmas, and she got to work. When her mom finally walked in to get a snack, she was greeted with the sight of a beautiful, color-filled unicorn.
Senior Elle Assumpcao has been creating art pieces for as long as she can remember. Her first attempts at this hobby all started on Christmas, when her parents gifted her her first art kit.
Since then, her love for art has flourished. Traveling often, she would bring her supplies and spend all of her vacations drawing and painting.
“I used to go on vacation a lot, and since I was [young], I could not do anything cool. So, I would just draw on the table while my parents played cards,” Assumpcao said.
She continued on with her artistic career, and she ended up taking a bunch of art classes– digital graphics, 2D design, basic 3D, advanced art, AP Art, and open studio– which opened the doors to many opportunities. She has also been a part of the Fine Arts Academy since her sophomore year.
“I love seeing Elle’s art,” senior Lenny Rodriguez said. “The creativity visible in her work shows how talented and passionate she is about her art work.”
Through her art classes, she has been able to participate at various art shows, such as the 4×6 McHenry show, the Fox Valley Conference, and the congressional show. Her favorite piece she has created is her self portrait, as well as her watercolor paintings, digital artworks, and her scratchboard of a cat.
“I like a lot of very digital art,” Assumpcao said. “I have a big tablet that I work on. I also really like painting, such as acrylic and oil. I like anything that I can do fast and just mess around with the entire time.”
She has been creating pieces for a long time, and her biggest supporter throughout her journey is her best friend: senior Tanya Garcia.
“Elle’s art amazes me,” Garcia said. “You can see how much thought and attention is put into it. When I see her work and her dedication, it inspires me.”
Assumpcao encourages anyone who wants to create something to go for it.
“There is no reason not to; there is no way you can do something wrong,” Assumpcao said. “There is no reason not to start, so just do it.”
