Based on one of the best-selling video games of all time, “A Minecraft Movie” hit theaters on April 4. Despite the initial hate the picture got for the trailers, the movie has become a smashing success. It has grown to be the biggest domestic debut and highest-grossing movie of 2025, earning more than double its budget of $150 million.
Directed by Jared Hess, who has previously worked on popular films such as “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre,” the movie features many famous faces such as Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garett “The Garbageman” Garrison.
The story follows a man named Steve as he opens a portal from the real world to the “Minecraft” world. After entering this portal, he encounters an evil “piglin” who wants to destroy the world, and he bands together with four unordinary people from Earth to defeat her.
From its bad graphics to its predictable storyline, the movie received pretty poor reviews from critics. Many have claimed that the movie, despite being all about creativity, is not very creative at all. The plot is nothing out of the ordinary, and the characters are one-dimensional. The movie received a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes’s “Tomatometer,” as well as a 6/10 on IMDb.
Fans, on the other hand, seem to love the movie. They rated the film an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, and many seem to love it for the nostalgic feel and silly jokes. The movie also made a handful of references to popular Minecraft content creators, such as Technoblade, Mumbo Jumbo, DanTDM, LDShadowlady, and Aphmau.
The movie did not only appeal to die-hard Minecraft fans, however. After the trailer was released, many viewers took to social media to make fun of the dotish teasers. This initial backlash, however, actually facilitated the love for the movie. Once the movie was finally released, users took it as an opportunity to make a new trend. They would scream and cheer at the movie theater during the silly scenes that were teased in the trailers, with some throwing popcorn and even bringing confetti cannons into the theater.
Although the movie may not have been anything super remarkable, the community of loyal fans and social media influencers have led to the movie’s success and popularity. It is definitely an entertaining experience, and it is perfect for anyone who wants to sit back and have a good time.
