The case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard gained national attention after the 2015 murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. What initially appeared to be just a murder later revealed much more.
For most of her life, Gypsy Rose was believed to suffer from multiple serious medical conditions. Her mother claimed Gypsy was severely sick, disabled, and mentally younger than her actual age. This led to years of unnecessary treatments, surgeries, and restrictions on her. Investigators later determined that Dee Dee Blanchard suffered from Munchausen syndrome, which is also known as factitious disorder imposed on another, and was abusing her daughter through this condition.
In June 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was found dead in her home. It was soon discovered that Gypsy and her online boyfriend, Nicholas Godejogn, planned the murder. Nicholas, though, was the one to proceed with the murder. Gypsy admitted that she was involved, stating that she felt trapped and believed there was no other way to escape her mother’s control. After the murder, they proceeded to flee.
Gypsy Rose later pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to prison. Nicholas was convicted of first degree murder and received a life sentence. Since her release from prison, Gypsy Rose’s story remained as something that everyone talked about through interviews, documentaries, and media coverage.
The question remains whether Gypsy should have stayed in prison or finally deserved her freedom that was once taken away.
