Dancing with the Stars Season Premiere

Dancing+with+the+Stars+Season+Premiere

The tenth anniversary of Dancing with the Stars kicked off its twentieth season with the usual introduction of the celebrity/dancer pairs, a rendition of the theme song from the jazz ensemble, and glittery ballroom setting. It started off as every other DWTS season, but there were a few things that were different about this season premiere from previous premieres.

Unlike any other season before, a former pro-dancer had assumed the role of a judge alongside Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli. Julianne Hough, sister of pro-dancer Derek Hough, will be praising and criticizing the performances of her former castmates.

The new addition to the judging panel is not the only thing that has raised a few eyebrows amongst loyal fans. DWTS is known for having – or at least trying to have – the most “diverse” list of contestants in an effort to appeal to every demographic possible.

And this year’s lineup definitely achieves that goal, and raises more than just a few eyebrows in the process. This year’s cast includes: Bruce Willis’s daughter Rumer Willis, shark tank business tycoon Robert Herjavec, Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin, fourteen-year old “Hunger Games” actress Willow Shields, LMFAO frontman Redfoo, double amputee army veteran Noah Galloway, R5 guitarist Riker Lynch, and model of controversial Carl’s Jr. Super Bowl ad Charlotte McKinney.

And to top it off, their performances were not half-bad, compared to first performances from past seasons. Dancing duo Rumer Willis and Val Chmerkovskiy performed a graceful and dramatic foxtrot, which gave them 32 points total and a spot on the top of the leaderboard.

Coming in second was tween, almost-famous, popstar Riker Lynch with an upbeat, energetic jive, which had earned the pair a score of 31 points. The dance was so energetic and bouncy that Tonioli felt the need to climb up on the judge’s table to express his praise.

And earning the bronze medal for team USA was gymnast Nastia Liukin with a Jazz Age-themed foxtrot to “New York, New York.” The judges had given them 30 points and Inaba called “the most explosive first dance ever.”

But with good performances, came bad performances. Charlotte McKinney’s jive performance had her concentrating more on her having a wardrobe malfunction, rather than focusing on her and her partner’s moves. Her and Redfoo were tied at the bottom with a score or 22 out of 40 points.

But it’s still too early in the competition to determine who’ll be named the winner of the 14-karat-gold-plated Mirror Ball trophy. Tune in to ABC at 8 p.m. on Mar. 23 to see which couples are one step closer to winning that trophy.
