Huntley speech team has strong showing in competitions

Huntley High School’s Speech Team won their ninth consecutive championship at the Fox Valley Conference on Friday, Jan. 27.

Both varsity and junior varsity competed with 10 first place finishers. Cary Grove High School came in second place behind Huntley qualifying with seven first place finishers. Cary Grove appears to soon become a strong up and coming opponent for Huntley.

Following the Fox Valley Conference, on Saturday Jan. 28, both varsity and junior varsity speech team competed for a second time. Although both teams competed on the same date, both participated in different competitions.

The Varsity Speech Team participated in the Geneso Invitational while JV contented in the ISTA State JV Tournament.

JV went against 19 other schools in the ISTA State Tournament placing as second among the top three finalists.

Winning most points for Huntley’s junior varsity team was Parth Patel, who was champion in both his events, impromptu speaking and extemporaneous  speaking

“I feel good, ” said Patel. ” I will be able to know my competition next year.”

The Varsity Speech Team ranked second in the Geneso Invitational behind Wheaton North High School.

Huntley scored a total of 41 points with many members ranking high in the competition and winning first place in various events.

Senior Brandon Bencko won first place in Extent.

Senior Marta Makowski won first place in Impromptu Speaking.

Senior Chris O’ Meara won first place in Radio Speaking.

Christian Aldridge and Olivia Stepp won first place in Dramatic Duet Acting.

Although Speech Team has officially ended their season, a handful of varsity team members continue to prepare for the regional’s competition this weekend.

“I am confident that we will do well in regionals,” said Bencko. “But anything can happen.”
