“Stowaway” takes viewers on a dangerous journey in space

Throughout time, people all over the world have been fascinated by what lies beyond the stars. Many have dreamed of being astronauts and exploring the vast and empty space, but many do not realize that this dream could result in a life-or-death situation.

The newest Netflix original, “Stowaway,” directed by Joe Penna, delves deep into the horrifying dangers of space exploration. The Sci-fi thriller leaves viewers at the edge of their seats. It features an all-star cast including Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, and Toni Collete.

Doctor Zoe Levenson (Anna Kendrick), Commander Marina Barnett (Toni Collete), and Biologist David Kim (Daniel Dae Kim) are tasked with a mission to Mars. Shortly after starting their journey to Mars, they discover a stowaway containing a launch engineer named Michael who had been left behind on the ship station.

Michael, who is played by Shamier Anderson, was found badly injured and Zoe patches him up.

The crew, except Michael, decide to let him help them on their long journey. After a few days on the journey, they make a chilling discovery that the ship’s oxygen supply has been damaged and it only has enough oxygen for three people.

Barnett and Kim decide that the only way they will have enough oxygen for the trip, one of the crew members will not survive. They decide that Michael should be the one to die, since he has no experience and will not help their research on Mars. Zoe is reluctant to this plan because she does not want a life to be sacrificed.

Instead, Zoe comes up with a plan to collect oxygen hovering high above the ship. This involves climbing 200 meters up on cables, risking the possibility of flying off into space. The group initially puts down this idea, as it is too dangerous. After a few days, the oxygen supply lessens even more and is only good for 2 passengers. Zoe and David make the risky decision to climb the cables, in order to retrieve oxygen and prevent anyone from dying.

The movie has a good balance of suspenseful and lighthearted moments. It is interesting to see a bond form between the crew members. The movie does a good job at building up the characters because there is a great amount of sympathy towards them, especially Michael.

Anna Kendrick and Daniel Dae Kim did a great job in their debut in their first Sci-fi, thriller movie. Tori Collete had experience in acting in this movie from her previous thriller and horror films, such as her role as the mother in, “Hereditary.” Shamier Anderson also does a great job and pulls his weight among the other stars in the movie. Anna Kendrick definitely took the spotlight in the movie because her role was very lighthearted and lovable.

The movie has mixed reviews, receiving a low 5.4/10 from IMDB, but a decent 77% from Rotten Tomatoes. I thought the movie was pretty entertaining and interesting, but I could see why some critics gave it a low rating. There were several moments in the movie where nothing was really happening, and the ending was pretty abrupt. Besides that, the movie was enjoyable to watch and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Sci-fi and thriller movies.
